Looking for great platforms for generating images? Here are 10 amazing Midjourney alternatives.

Image generation models are taking the world by storm. From social media, to websites, these programs allow people to generate high-quality images for any occasion.

Midjourney is certainly one of the most popular text to image tools. One reason for it is that Midjourney used to be free. However, now you need to pay to use it.

So, whether you’re looking for free Midjourney alternatives or are prepared to spend a few bucks, here are the best AI image generators.

1. DALL-E 3

Dalle-E is probably the most famous AI model, developed by the creators of ChatGPT.

Dalle-3 is the latest version of the platform, which you’ll have to use as Dalle-E 2 no longer accepts new users. Dalle-3 is certainly better at recognizing prompts. However, some users report that it’s more limited in terms of style.

Pricing

Dalle-E 3 is vailable to all users of ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20/month.

Pricing for generated images is $0.040 per standard image (1024x1024 resolution) and $0.080 per high-definition image.

Best for

While it might not be the best AI art generator, Dalle-3 is great for complex images used for websites, video games, and social media. It allows you to add as much detail as you want.

2. Stable Diffusion

This  is one of the best free Midjourney alternatives, available through Stability.ai and Hugging Face.

This open-source model for generating images is best-suited for photorealistic images, especially compared to Dalle-3, which, as was mentioned, tends to a more computer-generated style.

Pricing

Stable Diffusion is an open-source model, meaning it’s technically free to use.

However, if you’re using a third-party platform to access it (which is usually advised), this might incur additional costs (e.g. for additional features).

Best for

This is one of the best Midjourney alternatives for photorealistic images, and alternatives to stock photography.

3. Leonardo AI

This is one of the latest alternatives to Midjourney, created in 2022.Aside from image generators, Leonardo.ai also offers AI tools for marketing, print on demand, photography, interior design and architecture. . It also allows you to turn images into short animations.

It offers a free tier, with a daily quota of tokens (150), which is enough for 6 images per day.

Best for

Leonardo.ai has been developed primarily for game assets. However, the free version can be a useful tool for social media content creation.

Pricing

If you want to generate more images, there are three monthly plans to choose from.

  • Apprentice: $12 per month for 8,500 tokens
  • Artisan Unlimited: $30 per month for 25,000 tokens
  • Maestro Unlimited: $60 per month for 60,000 tokens

4. Adobe Firefly

Adobe Firefly is Adobe’s free AI tool, from the makers of the world’s best design software. So, it’s no surprise that the greatest advantage of Adobe Firefly is that you can easily edit the images created by AI.

Pricing

Adobe Firefly offers a free plan with 25 monthly credits.

The Premium Plan costs $5.36 per month and comes with 100 generative credits. There are also two other options available if you want to use Firefly along with other Adobe Programs - one app for $10.74 a month, and 20+ apps for $62.24 a month.

Best for

Adobe Firefly is a great tool for professional designers looking to speed up their workflow. The seamless integration with other Adobe software is another bonus in this case.

5. Night Cafe

This is yet another awesome free Midjourney alternative to test out. You get 5 credits daily, and can earn extra credits by publishing your designs or voting in the daily challenge.

NightCafe is not an AI generator itself, but rather a service that incorporates several AI models, including Stable Diffusion (the latest SDXL 1.0 model too), DALL-E 2, CLIP-Guided Diffusion, VQGAN+CLIP, and Style Transfer (which allows you transfer the style of one image to another).

There are also some basic image editing features available, although nearly as extensive as Firefly and Canva.

Music Album: Vol.1 Losing Myself

Pricing

If you want more credits, you’ll need to purchase one of the NightCafe Pro subscriptions. There are 4 plans available.

  • AI Beginner: 100 credits a month for $5.99
  • AI Hobbyist: 200 credits a month for $9.99
  • AI Enthusiast: 500 credits a month for $19.99
  • AI Artist: 1,400 credits a month for $49.99

Best for

Night Cafe is definitely one of the best AI art generators thanks to multiple AI models, as well as Style Transfer. However, it’s not the best tool for simple and modern images used in web design and digital graphic design

6. Copilot

Formerly known as Bing Image Creator, Copilot is Microsoft’s AI system, that includes the generation of images based on text prompts. It’s another platform that uses Dalle-3.It functions similarly to ChatGPT, which allows you to make quick and easy edits through the AI-powered chat tool.

That said, this is a relatively new tool, which hasn’t been created with image generation in mind specifically. So, it might not be the best Midjourney alternative, if it’s AI image generation alone you’re interested in.

It’s free to use, however you need a personal Microsoft account.

Pricing

Copilot is free to use for those with a Microsoft account. There’s also a Pro version available, which allows you to generate images faster and grants priority access to Access GPT-4 Turbo. During peak usage times, free users may be limited to other models.

Best for

If you have a Microsoft account, Copilot is definitely worth exploring. Use it as a way to get ideas, however don’t expect this will be the only AI image generator that you’ll need to use.

7. Canva AI

Canva is still the most popular DIY design platform, largely thanks to its beautiful templates created by professional Canva creators. However, Canva also has its own tool for generating AI images. It’s limited to 50 lifetime uses for Canva Free users. That said, it’s not the most refined text to image generative AI.

Canva

Pricing

Aside from the free plan, you can upgrade to Canva Pro and get 500 uses per month. A Canva Pro subscription costs

Best for

Canva is definitely not the best Midjourney alternative in terms of quality. However, it’s a good tool to use simple design elements and illustrations that can be used for creating graphic design.

8. Playground.ai

Playground AI is another great Midjourney alternative that many people overlook. The best thing about it is that you can create 50 images daily with the free plan. However, this gives you very little control over the generation process. Since it uses several models, the results are very good quality.

Pricing

As mentioned, the free version of Playground AI is already quite generous. However, this is what you get with the two paid options.

  • Pro ($15 a month): 1,000 images per day, unlimited presets, permanent private mode, unlimited photorealism images
  • Turbo ($45 a month): 2,000 images per day, 250 creative upscales, per month, 16 variations

Best for

This is definitely one of the best alternatives to Midjourney for getting lots of ideas. Although you’ll have to find a way to edit the images outside the platform, with 50 images a day and extra variations, you’ll have plenty to work with.

9. Dream by Wombo

This great free image generator is probably one of the most user-friendly options. It is free, however you’re limited to one result per prompt.

You can also download the free app, which can be useful if you want to generate images on  your phone.

Pricing

Dream’s Premium plan can be purchased on a monthly ($9.99) and annual ($89.99) basis, as well as with a lifetime subscription of $169.

The premium plan gives you more variations of your text to image inputs, more styles, and the ability to turn your images into videos.

Best for

If you want to experiment with a lot of different styles, this platform has you covered. However, don’t expect much in the way of customization or control over the generated images.
